Coláiste an Chraoibhín Makes A Wish

As part of our yearly Good Cause Initiative one of our Transition Year Mini companies has formed the Coláiste an Chraoibhín Fairy Door Company raising funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. The Fairy Door is selling for €15 and the personalised key is €2. All proceeds and donations go directly to the Make A Wish Foundation and every purchase enters you in a draw for a unique and once off Rocking Elephant (similar to a rocking horse).
Mr. Kenny introduced this initiative three years ago with thousands of euro being raised for various good causes that the students felt strongly about. Among the beneficiaries were the "Children in Hospital" Ireland charity who do excellent work helping families of children who have to go to hospital. The €1,200 raised through a "School Day Spinathon" went toward the purchasing of games consoles and televisions for the newly refurbished playroom in the childrens ward in CUH including consoles for the isolation ward.
Two oak Súgán (Old Irish) weaved chairs were constructed and gifted to the residents of Fermoy Community Hospital for their "Around the Fire Side" gathering where they come together to tell stories.
Last year over €1,000 was presented to the Donal Walsh "LiveLife" foundation who promote positive mental health for young people. We were delighted to have Donal's mother Elma down to receive the cheque and give an outstanding talk to the TYs on Donal's message of living life to the fullest and also on how they as a family have dealt with his passing. The students produced and handed out their own uniquely designed cards carrying Donal's and Coláistes message on positive mental health.
This year the Make A Wish Foundation is benefiting from our efforts. The students wrote a wonderful story explaining how the fairies come at night, through the door to keep you child safe from bad dreams. Available in a range of colours, this is an excellent gift to spark every childs imagination.
The doors can be purchased from Coláiste and any further information can be obtained either by phoning the school or contacting the Woodwork Deptment through its Twitter page @ColChraoibhinCS

Coláiste mini-company Crumblez
Coláiste an Chraoibhín mini-company Crumblez took part in their first trade fair which was organised by Bank of Ireland on Friday 27 November 2015.  Crumblez product is a tub containing the dry mixture for chocolate chip cookies, all a buyer has to do is add wet ingredients to the mix and bake in the oven.  Then a scrumptious, tasty, sweet, delicious chocolate chip cookie is made.  As their slogan says, “That’s how the Cookie Crumblez”.
The idea developed after many weeks of brainstorming, TY1 students came up with the product and the name Crumblez seemed ideal.  Twelve students took part in the trade fair and acted as sales people.  They informed potential customers about their product, packaging, price and marketing strategy. On the night, the company sold products, networked with other businesses and made important contacts.  Success was visible through the sales on the night.

Concern Charity Debating Team

This is a very important event in the school calendar where the school’s debating team competes in various Concern Charity Debates against other schools in Cork in aid of the charity Concern. This is a wonderful opportunity for transition year students to develop and improve their Reading, Writing and Research skills, as well as, their oral presentation skills and their overall written and oral literacy. This benefits the students on a huge scale and allows them to improve their self-confidence and ability to think analytically and logically. It is also great fun.
Under the guidance of Mr O’Regan the transition year students research the different motions which vary from The Refugee Crisis to Reducing the Voting Age to 16 and to Climate Change.
The school competes in 4 debating rounds from October to February against other schools in Cork. Our first debate this year was on whether or not “The EU should open its borders to Refugees”.  The team was made up of Anna Greaney, Joe Steele, James Quirke (captain) and Emily Nolan. There was  massive school support for us in St Als in Carraigtohill (our opponents) at 8pm on 28/10/15. Under the leadership of James Quirke the students debated very well and performed brilliantly.

The second debate is on the 11 November in Charleville. The team is made up of transition years Rebecca Kearney, Edel McCarthy, Kate Jenkin, Danielle Carol Collins and the motion is “Teenagers should be trusted to vote at 16”. We have one more debate before Christmas (at home) and all support is greatly appreciated. Debates take place at 8pm. Please feel free to support us. Go Team!!
