Second Half Burst Seals Munster Title for Coláiste

3/8/2016

Coláiste an Chraoibhín 4-8
Scoil Pól Kilfinane        1-5

It was cold, it was wet, it was blustery but at the full time whistle it was oh so sweet as the Coláiste Ladies Senior Team captured the Munster Football Plate title at Mannix Charleville. Backed by a hardy band of dedicated supporters who braved the near artic conditions the girls put on an exhibition of attack play in the second half to take the spoils in a hard fought encounter. Having lost the toss we were to play into the elements in the first half and braced ourselves for the Limerick onslaught that was soon to materialise. Kilfinane launched wave after wave of attack backed by the dying embers of Hurricane Jake but were met with equally resolute defending by the Coláiste rear-guard. Marshalled by Rachel O’Flynn at full back and her two able deputies in the corners Emily Nolan and Mary Sheehan the girls in blue kept out each and every challenge that came their way hassling to great effect and forcing errors from their opponents. On the rare occasion that they were breached it was left to Sarah Murphy to mop up, a job at which she is most adept. Eventually however the levy broke and Kilfinane found their way through to notch the first score of the game after a clever move to find the back of the net. Coláiste’s response was imminent and resounding after a sweeping move saw midfielder Danielle Carroll race through to finish neatly to the net. With their tails up the girls began to spread their wings a bit and within three minutes they had pierced the Kilfinane defences again to leave Katie Culligan staring at an open goal, a second invite was not required as the Fermoy woman rattled the net to put Coláiste ahead. This was to be the end of our dominance for most of the half as Kilfinane responded in fine form to play the better football. They registered four points in a row to retake the lead. The damage could have been much worse however but Coláiste remained disciplined in their tackling to make sure that any score was well earned by the Limerick side. The highlight of this defensive effort was a sequence from Kelly Parker who performed three consecutive block downs to frustrate the efforts of Scoil Pól with a fantastic display of commitment. As half time approached the crucial score of the game came. Ciara Sheehan scythed through the heart of the Kilfinane defence before offloading to Tammy O’Regan, she played a measured pass to the onrushing Orla Shealy who made no mistake in rifling the ball to the roof of the net right on the stroke of half time. This score put us two points up, against the run of play with a strong gale at our backs in the second half.
On the resumption of the second half it was a different Coláiste who came out all guns blazing. The intent was there from the start with the inspirational Cáit McCarthy soaring to claim the throw in to start the first attack. Five unanswered scores in a blitz of pressure sealed the title for the Coláiste as our opponents struggled to get out of their half such was the appetite of the girls in sky blue. Danielle got us up and running with a point followed by similar scores from Tammy and Ciara. It was Anna Greaney who put the nail in the Kilfinane coffin however as she latched onto  a loose ball in the square to poke home to put Coláiste into what would turn out to be an unassailable lead. Orla added another point to confirm the Fermoy side’s dominance. Kilfinane to their immense credit refused to throw in the towel and continued to launch attacks at our defence coming away with a pointed free from close range. This was to be their only score of the half as Coláiste fittingly battened down the hatches and played on the counter. Most Kilfinane attacks were quelled by our magnificent outside defensive unit of Player of the Match Aisling Healy, Aisling Nolan and Bláithín O’Keeffe who were carefully screened by Cáit in midfield. Coláiste were happy to soak up the pressure and catch their opponents on the counter resulting in a point by substitute Maeve Sheehan. As the final whistle went there was jubilation from the girls who narrowly lost County Final last year in heart-breaking fashion. Captain Tammy O’Regan accepted the brand new trophy and Aisling Healy accepted her player of the match award to wild cheers from their teammates.

County Semi Final For Coláistes 1st Year Girls
We travelled to Youghal for the quarterfinal. Their new facilities giving us a taste of what we can expect when our new sports hall arrives next year. The game began at a lively pace. We controlled possession for long periods and got plenty of shots up but unfortunately the ball didn’t want to drop through the basket. Our defense was working hard with the opposition finding it difficult to get time on the ball. Our only score of the quarter came from Fiona Healy. 0-2 to Coláiste at the end of the 1st quarter.

A new 5 players entered the fray continuing the good defensive work of the girls before them. While we were dictating the play we could only add another basket to our total courtesy of Chloe Flynn.

Into the third and Youghal had their purple patch scoring 5 to our 4. Fiona having her number marked twice on the score sheet making it 5-8 entering the final quarter.

The game was put to bed when Katie Scollard and Fiona made it 6-14 at the final whistle. While we found it hard to convert our possession in to scores our defensive effort was excellent. A testament to the Coláiste girls who have shown incredible dedication since picking up the basketball for the first time in September.

The Sporting Year (so - far!!!)

2/8/2016

The Sporting Year at Colaiste……………………….So Far
It’s been a full on year so far on the sporting fields and courts for Coláiste with all sports seeing success so far.
Boys GAA
Our younger teams have had a great year with progress being made on all fronts. Our top performers to date have been our U15 Footballers who went all the way to the Munster Final before unfortunately coming up short. Our Junior Hurlers also had a good year with wins over Nenagh and St Brendans College but unfortunately we were beaten by a stronger Ballingarry side in the semi-final. Our U14 hurlers are unbeaten so far in their group and look to progress in the new year. The calendar year ahead will also see action for U15 hurlers and U16 footballers so there’s plenty to play for in 2016!
Ladies GAA
Our Ladies teams have gone from strength to strength this year, further boosted by the arrival of enthusiastic and talented first years. Our U16 ladies have qualified for the Munster Final having defeated Cobh in a tight affair in tough conditions. They are awaiting confirmation for the final where they will face Kerry opposition. Our Senior Football team are also in the Munster Semi Final where they will face Kanturk. Camogie continues to show signs of a resurrection with our Senior team tasting glory at Munster Level having won the Hayes Intermediate Blitz in Clonmel coming through after a titanic struggle in the final. With County Championships awaiting for both Senior and Junior Ladies Football, Senior Camogie and the aforementioned Munster U16 Final, it’s going to be a busy last few months of the year for the girls!
Basketball
Basketball continues to thrive with a huge uptake in numbers from both boys and girls in the school. Top of the tree so far this year are our U16 girls who were crowned County Champions earlier this year in Neptune Stadium in what was a great day out. Hot on their heels however are our First Year girls who are unbeaten in all their games so far and are showing very few teething problems in taking up what is for most, a new sport. Our first year boys are hard at work at the moment in training as their schedule of games is soon coming on the horizon.
Pitch and Putt
A traditional forte of Colaiste students is our ability in and around the greens of the national pitch and putt courses. Dale Healy, Conor McCarthy and Seamus Óg Shealy were our high flyers this year in coming 4th in the All Ireland Pitch and Putt championships.
Athletics
Our cross country runners tasted some success in CIT before Christmas with our 3rd year boys coming 2nd in their team race on top of a number of impressive individual performances. In the South Munster Schools Cross Country race, on Friday last, Paul Hartnett, a first year student at Coláiste, tasted success, comming first in the Minor Boys Cross Country race at Curraheen, Cork.
Soccer
At Colaiste we cater for soccer at u14, u17 and U19 age groups and it is hugely popular in the school. Our Senior Soccer team are well into their campaign at the moment and are building on last year’s success having qualified for the Quarter Final of the Munster Senior Cup having defeated North Mon by a goal to nil last week. Our U14s and Seniors have a big program of games to come so keep up to date on our twitter account @colchraoibhin for updates on that or any of our sports!
With new sporting facilities on the way including a restoration of our playing pitch and new full size basketball court, the future is bright for sport at colaiste!
