The Sporting Year (so - far!!!)

2/8/2016

The Sporting Year at Colaiste……………………….So Far
It’s been a full on year so far on the sporting fields and courts for Coláiste with all sports seeing success so far.
Boys GAA
Our younger teams have had a great year with progress being made on all fronts. Our top performers to date have been our U15 Footballers who went all the way to the Munster Final before unfortunately coming up short. Our Junior Hurlers also had a good year with wins over Nenagh and St Brendans College but unfortunately we were beaten by a stronger Ballingarry side in the semi-final. Our U14 hurlers are unbeaten so far in their group and look to progress in the new year. The calendar year ahead will also see action for U15 hurlers and U16 footballers so there’s plenty to play for in 2016!
Ladies GAA
Our Ladies teams have gone from strength to strength this year, further boosted by the arrival of enthusiastic and talented first years. Our U16 ladies have qualified for the Munster Final having defeated Cobh in a tight affair in tough conditions. They are awaiting confirmation for the final where they will face Kerry opposition. Our Senior Football team are also in the Munster Semi Final where they will face Kanturk. Camogie continues to show signs of a resurrection with our Senior team tasting glory at Munster Level having won the Hayes Intermediate Blitz in Clonmel coming through after a titanic struggle in the final. With County Championships awaiting for both Senior and Junior Ladies Football, Senior Camogie and the aforementioned Munster U16 Final, it’s going to be a busy last few months of the year for the girls!
Basketball
Basketball continues to thrive with a huge uptake in numbers from both boys and girls in the school. Top of the tree so far this year are our U16 girls who were crowned County Champions earlier this year in Neptune Stadium in what was a great day out. Hot on their heels however are our First Year girls who are unbeaten in all their games so far and are showing very few teething problems in taking up what is for most, a new sport. Our first year boys are hard at work at the moment in training as their schedule of games is soon coming on the horizon.
Pitch and Putt
A traditional forte of Colaiste students is our ability in and around the greens of the national pitch and putt courses. Dale Healy, Conor McCarthy and Seamus Óg Shealy were our high flyers this year in coming 4th in the All Ireland Pitch and Putt championships.
Athletics
Our cross country runners tasted some success in CIT before Christmas with our 3rd year boys coming 2nd in their team race on top of a number of impressive individual performances. In the South Munster Schools Cross Country race, on Friday last, Paul Hartnett, a first year student at Coláiste, tasted success, comming first in the Minor Boys Cross Country race at Curraheen, Cork.
Soccer
At Colaiste we cater for soccer at u14, u17 and U19 age groups and it is hugely popular in the school. Our Senior Soccer team are well into their campaign at the moment and are building on last year’s success having qualified for the Quarter Final of the Munster Senior Cup having defeated North Mon by a goal to nil last week. Our U14s and Seniors have a big program of games to come so keep up to date on our twitter account @colchraoibhin for updates on that or any of our sports!
With new sporting facilities on the way including a restoration of our playing pitch and new full size basketball court, the future is bright for sport at colaiste!
